This question was asked by a friend on Facebook and what I replied goes as follows:
To be motivated you have to first have a motive.
That's what's at the heart of motivation. Firstly your motive should be yours to begin with, you can not be manipulated into it because one day you will grow the wisdom to learn the fact of it and you'll end up watching your whole idea of purpose crumble right in front of you, feeling cheated.
You want to ask yourself what would make your life bearable independent of your family and friends.
Make a list of things you can do, things you wanted to do when you were 7 to 12 and things that fascinate you. Then hunt for things the world lacks, then see if you can fill that gap while impacting most number of lives in a productive way.
Once you start, you'll most probably realize that you were wrong about the thing you cared about and you'll fail multiple times, but that's a good thing, it means you're being guided towards the thing that actually matters, just keep moving forward and you'll stumble into the thing that'll makes sense to you.
There will be lack of motivation from time to time due to failure and repetitiveness but you have to keep remembering all the times when you tried and succeeded and how that felt.
